SunlitGreen PhotoEdit is a simple program designed for users who have a little bit of photographic knowledge but aren't quite ready for some of the more sophisticated, full-featured program. It delivers basic image correction tools without a lot of fuss.

The program's interface is plain and intuitive, with a handful of buttons across the top and the rest of the features arranged in menus. All the typical features are here: users can crop, rotate, resize, and duplicate images, as well as adjust levels, contrast and brightness, color balance, and hue and saturation. The program also features auto levels and auto contrast options for quick fixes without a lot of fiddling. There are filters to blur and sharpen images, but unlike many programs of this sort, SunlitGreen PhotoEdit doesn't offer any special effects; this is definitely not a program for those who want to get playful or artsy. Also, it doesn't have cloning or retouching tools. The program's built-in Help file is brief but adequate. Overall, SunlitGreen PhotoEdit is pretty bare bones, and it will likely disappoint users who are looking to do serious image correction or to have fun with their photos. But for basic image adjustments in a lightweight package, this program is just fine.

From the Association Settings tab you can set which files can be associated with the Image Viewer to be viewed with it, you can easily check or uncheck the file or you can select all or deselect all files.

Vallen Jpegger is a fast, free, efficient image viewing tool that is capable of displaying virtually any kind of image file (more than 40 file types) as well as music, sound, and other files. It supports lossless JPEG rotation, so you can orient your snapshots without losing any data or clarity. It has fully scalable print support, a command-line option, slideshow mode, and a screenshot tool. It runs in both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows versions, including Windows 7. It also offers a huge range of language options, with more added all the time. It's designed for quickly browsing and searching huge libraries of images and files.

The Vallen Jpegger setup wizard offers three choices: the Default Layout, which always displays images in the large pane, and the Flipped thumbnails view, which displays the tree view; there's also an MP3 Music Explorer, which plays, organizes, and modifies music files. We selected the thumbnail view, though tabs let you easily toggle between thumbnails and main view or between the Image Viewer and the MP3 Explorer in any installation; the only difference is which tab appears first in the order. The tool's interface has a familiar Windows look and feel, with a full set of control icons that let you quickly print, search, flip, scale, and zoom images; capture screenshots; flip thumbnails; and more. There's even an icon titled How to Play Sounds that calls up a detailed Help page dedicated just to playing music and sound files via the MP3 Music Explorer. In fact, the Help menu offers more than just a good, searchable Help file: there's the Sound Interface, Setup Sequence, contact information, and other useful entries. We browsed to and opened several folders and images. Of special note is the lossless JPEG rotator; most image viewers can rotate JPEGs, but few actually contain the algorithms required to rotate an image without some data loss, hence the "lossless" descriptor. You can also make Jpegger your default viewer for JPEGs and other image files, if you prefer.

Vallen thinks Jpegger belongs on every PC. We concur. Sooner or later, you'll encounter some weird file type that you can't view in Explorer or other common tools. Jpegger can handle it.

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite is an impressive collection of powerful design software that can tackle all sorts of design jobs. Included in the package are: CorelDRAW, the main application for vector design and layout; Corel PHOTO-PAINT, for editing and retouching photos, Corel CAPTURE, for screengrabs; ConceptShare, a collaboration service; and the Bitstream Font Navigator. There are also a bevy of smaller utilities such as a bar-code wizard and an app for helping users optimize two-sided printouts.

With a suite that includes that many programs and features, it's essential to have solid in-program help, and CorelDRAW is loaded with dynamic hints, video product tours, and hands-on project tutorials that will have you designing elements in no time. Expert advice from professional designers walks users through specific practices such as airbrushing logos and creating textile patterns.

The templates for professionals are diverse and presented in a nifty interface that provides all sorts of useful information. You can sort templates by type--such as brochures, posters/signs, business cards, and newsletters--or by industry, although that list was empty except for "Landscaping." The interface also includes a space for accessing your own saved CDT templates, which can be created easily through the File menu.

Add another name to the roster of feature-rich freeware image editors: PhotoScape. Although it eats and leaks about as much memory as Firefox, this editor is perfect for those making the jump between JPEG and am-pro dSLR work.

It supports RAW, as well as all other major image formats from JPEG and PNG to animated GIFs. It comes with prebuilt templates for users to create photo collages, fumetti, and Web comics, and has a standard set of red-eye removal, light/shadow, and contrast-editing features. One warning about the RAW processing: although it looks like you can drag and drop, the converter doesn't change RAW to JPEG unless you load the RAW file from within the native file navigator. It's a minor bug, but one that can lead you to believe that there's no RAW support at all. You can also batch edit images, combine them, and print them out one at a time or several at once.

The program loads fast and possesses an interface completely different from those familiar with Adobe's industry-leading tools. Users are greeted by circular navigator complemented by a tabbed nav on the top of the main screen. Most but not all main features are accessible from either nav. It might take some people time to get used to the unusual layout, but it's only unusual for an image editor; otherwise it's intuitive, fast, and lacks only the most advanced of image editing features.

JetPhoto Studio is a feature-rich digital photo organizing and Web publishing software. It's an easy-to-use tool to efficiently organize photos with time, location, and keyword tags on your PC. A photo calendar, an EXIF reader and a GPS-driven photo locator (GeoTagging) are provided in JetPhoto. This software can generate beautiful Flash album movies and wallpaper with collages, or make and share pocketsize photos with cell phones. With JetPhoto, it's so easy to fix, crop, resize photos, or add watermarks in batches. For Web sharing, JetPhoto Studio can work with Flickr or JetPhoto Server to complete publishing photo albums to Web. Edit tags and descriptions on PC, and post all organized pictures to Flickr just by one-click. With JetPhoto Server, you can establish and customize your own standalone photo Web site.

FastPictureViewer (32-bit)

FastPictureViewer (32-bit) is an attractive image viewer that lets users quickly scan through images, view histograms and image metadata, and label photos. Although the program doesn't have a lot of features, it makes up for it to some extent with a very nice appearance.

The program's interface is quite sleek, with its functions organized in four buttons at the lower left corner. In kiosk mode, the program removes the title bar at the top and the taskbar, allowing users to maximize the viewing area. Overall, the program's appearance is very professional and modern, making it a pleasure to work with. Our only criticism of the interface is that moving between subfolders and parent folders is not particularly intuitive. The program's built-in Help file is quite brief and is more a list of keyboard functions than an explanation of how the program works. The program's features are not particularly impressive, although they all function as they should. The program displays an RGB histogram, as well as a metadata panel that shows the image's original exposure information. The program provides a basic labeling function that mimics that of other popular image browsers such as Lightroom and ViewNX. Users should be aware that the program is indeed an image viewer and not an image editor; you won't be doing any tweaking or correcting.

FastPictureViewer is free. It installs desktop icons without asking but uninstalls cleanly. We recommend this program for users looking for an attractive, lightweight way to view images.
