File splitters are utilities that break large files up into smaller chunks that can be easily reassembled into a single file when necessary. They make large files easier to handle and store on portable devices, for instance, or to post them online or copy them to a CD or DVD. KFK from KC Softwares is a free file splitter that also burns CDs and DVDs and spans disks. It can generate automatic rebuild files that can regenerate the original file without the program's help.

KFK's small dialog is clearly laid out, with a row of five buttons, two entry fields, a handful of selectable options, and a Split Now button with a progress bar. The About button and Help menu accesses the program's Web site and forums, but there's no actual Help file on the interface. We browsed to fill the File to Split field and then to select an output directory. Since it was a smallish file, we selected only three parts. You can customize the size of the parts in bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, or gigabytes or use one of many preset options, including specific splits for USB drives, floppies, and DVDs. We clicked Split Now and almost instantly received a Done message, while the split file's parts appeared in the target directory. We clicked Rebuild, navigated to the split files, checked the option to delete the split files, clicked Rebuild Now, and KFK instantly rebuilt the file and deleted the split files. We also split a file with the option to generate an automatic rebuild file selected. Clicking this file instantly reassembled the parts, and opening it confirmed its integrity. We didn't try the disk spanning utility, which lets you spread a large file over several floppy disks or other small storage devices. Floppies are still popular with some users, though, and they'll appreciate the extra capability.
