Meet MotionStudio 3D, Corel's inaugural entry into the animation and motion graphics software category. Geared more toward novices and prosumers than professionals, this capable newcomer lets you create 3D text and titles, lathe objects, and a variety of animations with relative ease.

MotionStudio's interface is intuitive, which should be comforting to motion graphics novices. The Edit Window displays your project as you work, and can reflect changes in near real-time--with virtually no waiting for rendering. Also, you can drag objects directly within the Edit Window for a more tactile way to customize basic aspects like position, rotation, and size.

The Timeline Window spans the bottom of the interface, and is relatively simple to navigate. Here is where you set the key frames that guide your animation. And with each property having its own independent timeline, it's easy to choreograph several different animated elements to work in concert.

The EasyPalette contains all of the preset effects available, and can be supplemented by plug-in effects. Here you'll find 3D Models, Text Objects, Lathe Objects, Shapes, and even simple extrusion effects. MotionStudio makes it simple to click around, experiment with these effects, and undo when necessary.

On top of its basic 3D titling and text animation capabilities, MotionStudio also includes a realistic particle effects tool that recreates the appearance and movement of elements like bubbles, fire, smoke, and snow. The tool even lets you make minor adjustments to the particles' properties such as texture, density, color, rotation, and more. Powerful, yet simple features like this are sure to attract casual users who aren't necessarily motion graphics wizards. The program also includes tons of animation presets, and lets you manipulate light sources, mimic motion blur, and adjust depth of field among other aspects.

And for the prosumers out there, MotionStudio 3D also boasts some rather powerful import and export capabilities. It can handle vector and raster graphics, and lets you easily work with files from other 3D applications. Meanwhile, it can output to a wide variety of video and still image formats including GIF and Flash (SWF) for the Web. And as expected, MotionStudio lets you easily output projects as 3D anaglyphs viewable with 3D glasses, or as side-by-side images playable on compatible 3D TVs--all with a single click.

Overall, we think Corel MotionStudio 3D provides a nice, affordable entry into the world of motion graphics. With its array of presets, powerful, yet simple features, and intuitive interface, it's a fantastic choice for newcomers and experienced motion graphics artists alike. But, if you're looking to get extremely granular in your animations, and you need a more professional level of control, then MotionStudio 3D might not be what you're looking for. If that's the case, then be prepared to spend a lot more money on your software.

We found ourselves wishing for the ability to change attributes and settings, but that is probably beyond the scope of such a program. The standard Explorer-style folder interface makes it easy to access all the information. The program outputs the system report as an HTML file that mimics the look of the program.
During testing, running a system report took longer than we expected, especially considering how quickly the information shows up in the main program. Otherwise, performance is excellent. Though the program is free, you must register your copy after 11 days and, for some bizarre reason, webmail users like those on Gmail and Yahoo Mail won't be able to receive the registration codes. Gearheads will appreciate the wealth of system information Fresh Diagnose provides, but the webmail issue is a glaring problem.

When it comes to picking the perfect browser, it's all about your own personal preference. The great thing about SlimBrowser is that you can customize the interface to be as simple or robust as you want it to be. It proved to be a worthy contender of some of the most popular browsers on the market.

SlimBrowser's default user interface is quite busy, but thankfully, you can rearrange toolbars and add or remove buttons to get it looking exactly the way you want. Though it comes with only one skin, others can be added easily. The command buttons are colorful without looking too cartoonish. Each URL that you type introduces a new tab, but the tabs don't clutter your window. Scroll buttons allow you to move back and forth between them quickly and easily. We were able to create and manage site groups for even more control over browsing. The URL filter worked exceptionally well to block ads while we browsed the Web, and the browser's Privacy feature allowed us to quickly clean any browsing traces left behind.

Should you need it, the browser does include a built-in Help feature, though most will jump right in with this intuitive and customizable freeware. If you're looking for a new browser, there's a lot to love about SlimBrowser. We highly recommend it for anyone who isn't quite happy with his or her current browser.

FeedDemon 4.0.0.22

Long thought of as one of the best RSS and Atom feed readers around, FeedDemon 3.1 is a good effort to move beyond some of the controversial changes that were implemented during the upgrade to version 3. This latest update includes multiple new features, although we found that performance hadn't changed much.

FeedDemon has dumped its proprietary online synchronization site, newsgator.com, in favor of syncing with Google Reader. New users won't notice, but older users are likely to lose many unread feeds since Google can't import feeds with more than 10 unread items. Once synced, unread items can number more than 10 items again. There's also a new, persistent ad placed in the lower left corner of the interface that goes away when you buy a $10 license. FeedDemon's performance could be a lot better--its RAM usage was hefty and even 3GB of RAM didn't prevent occasional program hang-ups. FeedDemon's database can be massaged into being a bit quicker by regular compacting, but that extra step is cumbersome.

The new features list is mostly about bringing FeedDemon into parity with Google Reader, although that's not necessarily a bad thing. The program has relied on Google for online syncing since version 3, and now includes on-the-fly item translation, a "Shared by people I follow" for syncing shared Google Reader items, and a "like" icon that must be enabled in the new option for customizing item icons. More short URL previews are supported than before, you can automatically mark incoming items read on a per-feed basis, and the Send To option now includes Twitter. Still, FeedDemon remains a favored option for desktop feed management.

Functional and useful, Evernote goes beyond its architecture and is also interesting. It's a true three-platform play: it works very well, and somewhat differently, on desktop computers, mobile phones, and over the Web. Evernote is a good note-taking application. If you have the Evernote application running on your camera phone, it will automatically upload your snapshots to the Evernote server, creating a useful archive of them. But the killer feature is that it also does OCR on your images so you can find them later by searching for text in them. Use this tool to snap pictures of products you see in stores and want to remember, to grab whiteboards in meetings, and to take pictures of people with name tags at conferences. It's one of those utilities that might just change your life.

Everything you do on your phone and on your computer gets synchronized to your Evernote account on the Web. Since it synchronizes as soon as you log on, and regularly thereafter, reinstalling the software or losing data because of a crash are nonfatal problems. Do note that the Web-based text editor isn't keystroke compatible with the PC-based editor. It makes switching between the two experiences confusing. The free version offers 40MB per month for uploading and unpredictable OCR performance, while $45 a year gets you a 500MB a month allowance, priority OCR, better security features, and support.

Big Brother Keylogger 4.7

It's easy to operate, but this application is not a perfect keylogger. Big Brother Keylogger's opening cluttered interface luckily includes a simple start capture wizard. After some time with the program, the interface becomes much easier to follow. The majority of commands are invoked with a single click on large buttons. Options are easy to set and most need no explanation. The program barely needs the single page of instructions found under the Help menu.

Big Brother Keylogger performs well in the primary functions of this genre. It is easy to invoke, hides well, and captures key strokes, programs invoked, and Web sites visited. You can set it to capture screenshots every select number of seconds, though it can't be set to capture at program start or Web site selected. It isn't difficult to hide the program from family members and novice users. The demo's process is easy to find in Task Manager, but uses less memory than Windows Explorer.

A minor downside is that the very novice user may not know how to properly configure the utility to send update e-mails, but the program's instructions should help most get this function set up. Big Brother Keylogger is a solid performer that should satisfy parents and small business owners with basic keylogging needs.

Who says you can't run a spy operation on the cheap? Actual Keylogger lets you record every keystroke typed on a computer, and it doesn't cost a cent. It can't snap screenshots or automatically e-mail reports, but it's decently equipped and surprisingly convenient for a freeware program. It's reasonably stealthy, too. You can conceal its folder, disable its record in the Add/Remove Programs dialog, hide its shortcuts, encrypt its logs and password-protect its settings. Unfortunately, the program process itself is unprotected, and a savvy user could easily spot it and stop it. But for no-cost surveillance of an easy target, Actual Keylogger is hard to beat.

Home Keylogger 1.7

This crippled variant of Family Key Logger is small and simple, but stealth is not its strong point. As in its more robust sister program, keystrokes are recorded in a TXT file, a format that proves difficult to analyze. Filtering options might make it easier, but there are none to be found. To its credit, the program doesn't slow system performance. If cloak-and-dagger operations are a top priority, this program is probably not your best bet. You can hide Home Keylogger's system tray icon manually, but the program will inevitably be revealed through common activities such as spyware scans, process management (through Task Manager or Process Explorer), and even a plain old system reboot. Once found, the program turns out not to be password protected, and settings can be changed by anyone who can guess the default (and unchangeable) key combination. Straightforward but absolutely disclosed and unprotected, Home Keylogger can only be recommended for spying on inexperienced users--a demographic that, these days, may only include your toddlers.

We opened the Options dialog, clicked the check box to associate KooLoader with Internet Explorer, opened a browser window, and navigated to a download. When we right-clicked the link, the context menu showed an option to download the file with KooLoader, and a detailed properties dialog opened when we started the download. Right-clicking the program's icon in the System Tray let us instantly pause and resume downloads and open the program's interface. The tabbed Options dialog also gave us access to the scheduling, file segmenting, and language options. We tried initiating several downloads at once, and KooLoader handled them easily.

XNote Timer is a simple and easy-to-use stopwatch and timer. A few extra features make this program fun, but its best attribute may be that it's so simple to use.

The program's interface is basic and easy to understand. There's nothing fancy, no skins or different display styles. The clock consists of black digital numbers on a gray background. The program's handful of options can be accessed from a drop-down menu. We liked that the program can be resized in any direction by dragging its borders, and a compact feature allows users to minimize the menu and display only the clock itself. With these versatile resizing capabilities, the program can be displayed full-screen or as just a tiny square. Both the stopwatch and timer features are easy to use. For the stopwatch, users need only click Start. The timer can simply count down a given amount of time, but users can also set it to play a sound file and/or open a program when time runs out. Both the stopwatch and timer display hundredths of a second. Users can set hot keys to start and stop the program, reset the clock, or access the menu. The program has no Help file, but we didn't really miss it, as all of the programs features are fairly self-explanatory.

XNote Timer is free. It requires no installation. We recommend this program to all users looking for a simple stopwatch or timer.

Although this free Net phone's feature set appears to be up to par, its nonintuitive design and questionable performance prevent it from trumping its more capable competitors. Upon launching PicoPhone, many users may find themselves baffled as to where to begin, because the program doesn't automatically prompt you to register and lacks built-in help files. To create an account, you'll need to visit the developer's site, select a username and password, then connect to the server via the Preferences icon. Before we figured this out, we received periodic error pop-ups with vague, unhelpful messages. Once we finally began placing calls to other PicoPhone users, we weren't impressed with the muddy sound quality, although we were pleased with the feature set. The utility boasts its own basic chat client, supports conference calling, and lets you adjust your microphone and speaker volume via two prominently displayed sliders. Although this free program has potential, it needs some work before we can give it our kudos.

It can rename items using a wide range of methods: copying, substituting, translating, moving, reordering, and attaching letters, numbers, and characters in specified or randomly generated patterns. It also supports Unicode strings for a wide range of languages. It has sophisticated, flexible filtering options to exclude or include items for processing, and it can modify file or folder information such as time and date stamp.

Flexible Renamer is a portable application that doesn't have to be installed: just click it and it runs. It uses an interesting and efficient variation on the typical Windows interface, with the usual left-hand Explorer panel and right-hand main view separated by a panel of controls, including a menu of commands, some filter options, and the Rename buttons. The main view has a customizable gridded display that shows the current name, new name, location, and other information about selected items. Since by far most people want a file renamer to manage the gigabytes of digital snapshots they upload, we started with some of our own. We browsed to a target folder and its contents appeared in the main view. In the central panel, we clicked Remove Number or String, and the selection expanded with many specific options. We made our selections, clicked Rename, and the renamed files appeared in the main view. We clicked Advanced Rename, and controls and selections appeared for Wild Card, Regular Expression, and Translation methods with search fields and numerous Presets and Support settings, the latter enabling a huge range of matches; there's even an email link to request new matches. The Advanced Renaming option proved easy to use for special instances, like renaming a batch of files to fit in a previously defined sequence. We also like the Tag Rename option, which lets you label files with information such as their type (MP3, EXIF, etc.) as well as the Attributes tab, which we used to change the date stamp to the date when the images were consolidated.

This is a handy file maintenance tool, and we recommend it.

MaxMem from AnalogX is a simple program that maximizes the amount of physical memory available to your system at any given moment. You configure how much memory you want available under certain circumstances, and MaxMem will passively monitor your system's resources, freeing up memory as needed.

When it's running, MaxMem lives in the System Tray; right-clicking its icon calls up a menu with selections for configuring and running the program. We clicked Config, and the Configure dialog appeared. It has sliders for MaxMem's three memory-freeing functions, each of which accurately describes its behavior, too: Minimum, Periodic, and Aggressive. Minimum is the smallest amount of memory the system requires; Periodic checks every 3 minutes when memory is idle; and Aggressive flushes everything not in use every half an hour. This dialog also has a drop-down menu for choosing which of the three cleanup options is triggered when you left-click the System Tray icon. We chose Aggressive to gauge the maximum effect, set our Memory Boundaries, and clicked OK. We looked in the System Tray, and MaxMem displayed our system's memory use for the last 60 seconds in the tiny but surprisingly readable bar graph that serves as its icon; hovering the cursor over this icon also calls up a small box displaying memory resources and percentage free. We clicked on the icon, and a message indicated MaxMem was working. The program's displays showed that aggressive cleaning had indeed reclaimed memory, but whether it freed up enough of our test system's 6GB of RAM to make a substantial difference in performance is hard to say.

If your system is new or has lots of RAM, you might think you don't need MaxMem, but it can improve performance in gaming, video production, and other memory-intensive operations. In older systems or those with less memory, it could help bridge the gap between efficiency and frustration. MaxMem is free, too, so it's cheaper than the least-expensive RAM upgrade.

We were quite pleased with the program's results.

Some of what WinUtilities does--disk defragmenting and cleanup, for example--can be accomplished using the System Tools that come with Windows. But we liked the way the program combined these and other functions into one clean, intuitive interface, making all of the most useful Windows maintenance utilities easy to access. The program contains a full complement of features to help you manage your computer's performance and security, including a file shredder, duplicate file finder, task scheduler, and much more. The program's One-Click Maintenance feature allows users to run a variety of customizable buttons with the click of a single button. The program's built-in Help file is well written and thorough. Overall, we were quite impressed with WinUtilities, and we think it's a great tool for keeping your system in good shape and free of performance-hindering junk.

HTML Guardian makes it nearly impossible to steal your intellectual property online.

HTML Guardian did a quick scan of our system as soon as we opened it. The main interface is a small dialog that's packed full of features and controls, yet an efficient, clean layout makes everything easy to handle. This tool is actually a suite of utilities that offer ultra-strong password protection; file, site, an image protection; file conversion; and more. Access to settings is provided through the file menu, a Settings button, and a series of icons controlling each setting's properties interface separately. A Filters button lets you configure a variety of options, such as excluding files above or below a preset size. It's easy to use, too. We started with password-protecting an HTML file. We clicked Settings/Encryption and made our selections, including enabling any browser as well as setting the password and the conditions under which it's accepted. We browsed to an HTML file, opened it, and clicked Encrypt, which took just seconds as displayed by a progress bar. We clicked Test, and the offline Web page opened blanked out in Firefox with a password entry dialog. We entered the password we'd just enabled, clicked OK, and the page loaded. The other tools are similarly easy, though some, such as the Scripting tool, will appeal to more advanced users.

As the developers note, HTML Guardian is the cyber-world's de facto standard for securing digital property rights, and not without reason; the platform has undergone constant refinement and updating, and it shows. Coders, Web page developers, writers, and anyone with digital property they'd like to protect ought to take a look at HTML Guardian.

ActiveWords is a nifty free program that does seven useful things when you type key words or letter combinations and hit the space bar. In fact, the developers believe program's seven categories make up the 80 percent of computing tasks in the 80/20 paradigm: Substitute Text, Launch a Program, Open a Document, Navigate to an Internet Site, Send E-Mail, Open a Folder, and Scripting. You specify your ActiveWords using quick, easy commands, and then associate the words with one of the seven tasks via simple wizards. It lets you create easy-to-remember shortcuts that do what you need most often: Type "addy," for example, and have ActiveWords fill in your entire address. Or launch a program by typing its initials. Open a Web site with a word you're typing anyway; a dictionary site, for example.

ActiveWords' main interface is a thin toolbar that appears at the top of your desktop and looks like part of a maximized application. A Menu and basic icons flank a display that shows text as it's typed. Clicking the ActiveWords symbol on the right-hand side calls up a dialog for selecting basic ActiveWord commands such as add, help, find, and weather (which fetches weather information) as well as editing and customizing the choices. We began with the video tutorial, which is brief and does an excellent job of walking new users through each function. We typed "add," hit the space bar twice, and the Add ActiveWords wizard opened. We selected Open a Document, browsed to a file, selected it, labeled the action, created a four-letter ActiveWord, deselected the Confirmation Flag (since the "word" was an abbreviation, not standard English) and created an active word, which launched the silly GIF animation we'd selected when we typed it and hit the spacebar: pretty neat. It'll be well worth your time to create ActiveWords for your name, address, and groups of email addresses, and for launching programs you often use but don't want on the Start menu. Whatever it is you want to do quicker, ActiveWords can make it so.

The freeware version is limited to 30 ActiveWords, which is probably more than most users need anyway. Power users can get the commercial version, which handles more like 20,000 ActiveWords.

It supports lossless JPEG rotation, so you can orient your snapshots without losing any data or clarity. It has fully scalable print support, a command-line option, slideshow mode, and a screenshot tool. It runs in both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows versions, including Windows 7. It also offers a huge range of language options, with more added all the time. It's designed for quickly browsing and searching huge libraries of images and files.

The Vallen Jpegger setup wizard offers three choices: the Default Layout, which always displays images in the large pane, and the Flipped thumbnails view, which displays the tree view; there's also an MP3 Music Explorer, which plays, organizes, and modifies music files. We selected the thumbnail view, though tabs let you easily toggle between thumbnails and main view or between the Image Viewer and the MP3 Explorer in any installation; the only difference is which tab appears first in the order. The tool's interface has a familiar Windows look and feel, with a full set of control icons that let you quickly print, search, flip, scale, and zoom images; capture screenshots; flip thumbnails; and more. There's even an icon titled How to Play Sounds that calls up a detailed Help page dedicated just to playing music and sound files via the MP3 Music Explorer. In fact, the Help menu offers more than just a good, searchable Help file: there's the Sound Interface, Setup Sequence, contact information, and other useful entries. We browsed to and opened several folders and images. Of special note is the lossless JPEG rotator; most image viewers can rotate JPEGs, but few actually contain the algorithms required to rotate an image without some data loss, hence the "lossless" descriptor. You can also make Jpegger your default viewer for JPEGs and other image files, if you prefer.

Vallen thinks Jpegger belongs on every PC. We concur. Sooner or later, you'll encounter some weird file type that you can't view in Explorer or other common tools. Jpegger can handle it.

File splitters are utilities that break large files up into smaller chunks that can be easily reassembled into a single file when necessary. They make large files easier to handle and store on portable devices, for instance, or to post them online or copy them to a CD or DVD. KFK from KC Softwares is a free file splitter that also burns CDs and DVDs and spans disks. It can generate automatic rebuild files that can regenerate the original file without the program's help.

KFK's small dialog is clearly laid out, with a row of five buttons, two entry fields, a handful of selectable options, and a Split Now button with a progress bar. The About button and Help menu accesses the program's Web site and forums, but there's no actual Help file on the interface. We browsed to fill the File to Split field and then to select an output directory. Since it was a smallish file, we selected only three parts. You can customize the size of the parts in bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, or gigabytes or use one of many preset options, including specific splits for USB drives, floppies, and DVDs. We clicked Split Now and almost instantly received a Done message, while the split file's parts appeared in the target directory. We clicked Rebuild, navigated to the split files, checked the option to delete the split files, clicked Rebuild Now, and KFK instantly rebuilt the file and deleted the split files. We also split a file with the option to generate an automatic rebuild file selected. Clicking this file instantly reassembled the parts, and opening it confirmed its integrity. We didn't try the disk spanning utility, which lets you spread a large file over several floppy disks or other small storage devices. Floppies are still popular with some users, though, and they'll appreciate the extra capability.

KFK is quick, easy to use, and free. If you're in need of a good file splitting tool, we recommend taking a good look at it.

Windows' built-in Disk Cleanup tool does a pretty good job, but it's designed to be as easy and harmless as possible, and many users prefer a third-party tool. Disk Cleaner is a free, open-source, standalone hard-disk cleaning utility that's designed to be fast and easy to use yet thorough in its operation.

We ran the Windows Disk Cleanup tool before running Disk Cleaner to better gauge Disk Cleaner's supposed advantages. Amazingly, the Windows utility quit working during the cleanup process, despite a robust system that was fairly clean to begin with. We then ran Disk Cleaner, which quickly analyzed our system and listed items that could be removed in its plain dialog interface. The listing is much more comprehensive than the Windows tool, with options to clear the caches, history, and cookies of non-IE browsers like Firefox and Google Chrome as well as Adobe and Zip files, the Java Runtime Cache, and more. We checked everything we wanted cleaned up, pressed Clean, and Disk Cleaner showed a progress dialog that listed each completed stage of the process in detail. After we'd run Disk Cleaner, we ran the Windows tool again. It didn't find anything Disk Cleaner had missed, although it did work this time. Nothing stopped working on our system as a result of the files Disk Cleanup deletes, which is what we wanted to see. We can't say our system ran significantly faster after a cleanup, but at least we know that Disk Cleanup did its job as an important part of regular system maintenance. We like the ability to save your cleanup selections as presets to run later as well as the program's options for managing how it deletes system files and other functional parameters. You can even save cleanup results for later comparison.

Disk Cleaner is portable freeware that requires no installation; just click the executable file to run the program on any Windows machine. This means you can carry it around on your USB keychain drive (everybody's got one, don't they?) and run it to remove traces of your activity when you use a public or unfamiliar computer, or help out inexperienced friends by showing them how to clean up their systems.
